During 2010, regeNer8 is running an Industry Challenge programme focused on tools and technologies for regenerative therapies. Our first meeting took place in Manchester in February where representatives from regener8’s Industry Members’ Group plus clinical and academic members met to prioritise some of the top challenges affecting the manufacture and safety and efficacy testing of RegenMed products in development. Two consortia were formed on the day to address improved methods for cell expansion/scale-up and pro-angiogenic systems. The Technology Strategy Board attended the meeting and provided a steer to facilitate applications to their Tools and Technologies funding call.

This second meeting will highlight the Wellcome Trust’s translational funding programme, providing an overview and case study. This will be followed by a networking session with facilitated consortium brokerage. Many issues (Challenges) remain on our list – including for instance, karyotypic changes during culture, rapid mycoplasma testing, shelf-life extension, analysis of cell-scaffold/cell-material interactions and in-process monitoring of cell phenotype. This is far from exhaustive and we would of course welcome the contribution of other challenges suitable for collaborative translational projects.
