Sonovia Ltd is a technology start-up company based near Cambridge, UK. It is developing an innovative ultrasonic patch technology that has applications in localised therapy and drug delivery. Sonovia started life developing solutions for cosmetic dermatology but recent developments have enabled deeper tissue targets, e.g. orthopaedic, to be within reach. Sonovia is working closely with renowned product development consultancy The Technology Partnership (TTP) to develop the multiple frequency patch technology that can be incorporated into patches, bandages and even fabrics. The technology is being developed for a range of compact and portable products that are hands-free enabling home, remote and even ambulatory use without the need for a trained operator for the first time. Recurring revenues from sales of coupling gels/pads provide an attractive business model and also opens up potential for needle-free drug delivery when actives are incorporated into the gel. Sonovia is currently business angel and government grant funded and has recently secured funding from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) to develop a home-physio product for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis.
