Researchers in bid to win new healthcare funding

18 Sep 2009
A new funding scheme is being launched to encourage collaboration between the region’s researchers, academics, clinicians and industry in the field of regenerative medicine.

The Translational Regenerative Medicine Award will be launched by regeNer8, at a free event at Weetwood Hall in Leeds on Tuesday 6 October.

RegeNer8 is a virtual research centre established by N8, a partnership between the North’s eight research-intensive universities including Newcastle and Leeds, to promote scientific, social and economic development in the North of England.

At the event, regeNer8 members will be presented with three clinical challenges which they will then have the opportunity to discuss in detail with potential industry partners in a series of facilitated workshops.

Delegates will then have the opportunity to form consortiums with other regenerative medicine experts from academia and industry to develop a project proposal which addresses the clinical need, competing for a share of significant funding available.

The winning projects will be announced at regeNer8’s second anniversary meeting on Tuesday 17 November and will be expected to start in early 2010.

Professor John Fisher, regeNer8 centre director, said:

“Throughout the year, regeNer8 has initiated a programme of collaborative R&D and technology validation projects. Now, through the Translational Regenerative Medicine Award we’re hoping to further stimulate collaboration between the sector’s academics, clinicians and industry professionals.

“This is an opportunity to capitalise on the fantastic work that is going on in the north of England, provide innovative solutions to unmet medical needs in the field of regenerative medicine and provide a boost to the local economy. “
